How to sell your iPhone handsets on display.

What to do before you sell your iPhone

When planning to sell your iPhone it’s a good idea to make sure that you don’t leave any data on it. Therefore in this how to guide are some good practices when it comes to wipe your tech devices to ensure that when you sell your iPhone it is as clean as possible.

Backup iPhone data

It’s a good idea to create a backup of your iPhone data. In this way you can use it if you are upgrading to a new iPhone. Use either iCloud or iTunes to backup your handset so that you can restore it to your new phone.

Sign out of iMessage

Signing out of iMessage is a good practice when selling your iPhone. iMessage uses your phone number or email. Therefore it’s best to sign out of this service so that a future user of the phone doesn’t have access to it.

To sign out of iMessage head to “Settings > Messages” and disable the “iMessage” toggle option.

Sign out of FaceTime before you sell your iPhone

In the same way FaceTime also uses a phone number or email in order for the service to work. Signing out of FaceTime means that someone won’t have access to your call logs.

Head to “Settings > FaceTime” and disable that toggle option as well.

Sign out of Apple ID before you sell your iPhone

Most functions on your iPhone are linked to the Apple ID. This includes your backups, photos and iCloud files. Unlinking the iPhone from your Apple ID therefore means a future user of the phone cannot access any of these documents or data.

Signing out of your Apple ID is easy. Just go to “Settings” and tap on your name at the top of the menu. On the next screen that appears, scroll down to the bottom and hit the “Sign Out” button.

The iPhone will then ask you for your Apple ID password to confirm the signing out. Next hit the “Turn Off” option to complete the process. The iPhone will now sign out of your Apple ID and unlink the connected services.

Erase the iPhone before you sell it

After signing out of your Apple ID the next step is to erase all of the content and settings. In this way nothing is left behind.

Before proceeding on this step, it is important that you have a backup otherwise your data is gone forever.

Once ready to proceed with erasing the iPhone go to “Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone”.

Next you will be prompted to enter your passcode. The phone will then proceed to erase all content and settings so that it will act as a new clean iPhone. Once this step has been completed you are almost ready to sell your iPhone.
