An iPhone software update to download and install the latest version of iOS.

How to update iPhone or iPad to the latest version of iOS

Have you recently tried to install an app and found that it doesn’t work? Is your iPhone or iPad constantly reminding you that your software is out of date and needs updating? Here is how to update your iPhone or iPad to the latest iOS software.

How to update iOS on iPhone or iPad

1. Firstly, make sure that your device has enough power to get through the process, as it can take up to an hour to fully update and will therefore drain the battery quite heavily. If you are uncertain about it making it all the way though, plug in your device and leave it on charge.

2. Next, go to Settings > General > Software Update.

3. Finally, pressing “Download and Install” will start the process.

Sometimes your phone may not have enough space to complete the update. If this occurs, it will ask you to remove apps to make space for the update. Once this has been completed, you can press continue.

Newer iPhones and iPads will re-install the removed apps after the update has been completed.

4. Once you press install, the update will start.

Alternatively you can press “later” and the update will be installed over night or “remind me later” to receive a notification at a later date.

5. Finally you may be asked to enter your pass code. This happens to confirm that you are certain you wish to update to the latest iOS or iPadOS.

Why can’t I update my iPhone or iPad?

If you see an error message while updating, it may be that there was not enough space to install the update and your device did not notify you for whatever reason. If this happens, clear some apps of off your device and try again.

If it still does not work you can attempt to manually update it via your computer.

Manually updating iOS via a Computer

1. Download, install and open the most recent version of iTunes on your device.

2. Connect your device to your computer using a genuine Apple Lightning Cable.

3. On your iPhone a message will appear on the screen asking if you trust the device you are connecting to. As long as you do trust the device, and are sure there is no virus or malware present that may affect either of the devices, you can enter your pass code and press confirm.

4. In iTunes, go to General > Check for Update.

5. Push “Download” and then “Update”.

If you see an error message while updating, it may be that there was not enough space to install the update and your device did not notify you for whatever reason. If this happens, clear some apps of off your device and try again.
